This exhibition pairs 25 of Teenie Harris’ photographs with the voices of people who lived them.
Charles “Teenie” Harris (1908-1988) was a respected local African-American photo journalist who one of the most detailed and intimate records of the black urban experience known today.
Guest curator Dr. Ben Houston spent several years gathering oral histories revolving around the African American experience in Pittsburgh, producing over 150 recorded interviews. For the exhibition, Houston’s selections from the Teenie Harris Archive, and from his own oral histories, creates a rich conversation on community and identity during the civil rights movement in Pittsburgh.
