This special Labor Day event features a cook-out following a a reading and conversation recognizing the important civic role poet laureates play.

A poet laureate is an artist officially appointed by an institution (usually a government) to compose poems for special events and occasions. The term comes, in part, from the Ancient Greek custom of bestowing a wreath of honor (called a “laurel”) to a poet or hero. The Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowships are financial awards given to honor poets of literary merit.

Scheduled to share their work are the poets Paisley Rekdal, Raquel Salas Rivera, Kim Shuck and Molly Fisk.
