The mysteries of magic and romance are revealed in this masterful 1735 baroque opera written by German composer George Friedrich Handel (1685-1759).

At the story’s center is a malicious sorceress named Alcina, who lives on an enchanted island with her sister Morgana. Alcina’s favorite hobby is using magic to lure and toy with men before transforming them into animals or inanimate objects. Her latest pet is chivalrous knight Ruggiero, whose fiancĂ© arrives on the island to reclaim him — presenting Alcina with a challenge she dares not lose.

This production is a joint project of the Pittsburgh Opera and Chatham Baroque.
