“Ariodante” is a beautiful opera set in medieval Scotland and composed in 1735 by the prolific Baroque master George Frideric Handel (1685-1759).
The devious Duke of Albany sees marriage to the king’s daughter as the best way to take the throne. But there is a stumbling block: Princess Ginevra is committed to her fiancĂ©, Prince Ariodante. So the duke tricks Ariodante into believing that Ginevra has been unfaithful. The plot succeeds until the duke realizes that one of the court ladies knows the truth — and decides to murder her.
Each act contains opportunities for dance that were originally composed for dancer Marie Sallé (1707-1756), who challenged the male-dominated theatrical world of 18th century Paris.
Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
