The Pittsburgh Ballet’s 50th season continues with this classic tale of love among the gnarled trees of an enchanted forest.

Based on various European folk tales, “Beauty and the Beast” was finally published in a 1740 novel written by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1685-1755).

The story centers on an impoverished merchant, who agrees to deliver one of his daughters to a strange creature in exchange for renewed wealth. But while the merchant decides to renege on the deal, his favorite child — and youngest daughter — opts to meet the Beast and an unusual romance is born.

This production brilliantly matches the music of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) with the movements designed by American choreographer (1909-1984).
