New York based, award-winning, vocalist and educator Charenee Wade pays tribute to the renowned Gil Scott-Heron

Poet, musician and author Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) is best known for his spoken word performances in the 1970’s and 1980’s. His work typically addressed the social and political issues of the era.

Charenee Wade made a name for herself as runner-up to Cecilé McLorin Salvant in the 2010 Thelonious Monk competition, demonstrating a vocal capability that made her the perfect candidate to deliver Scott-Heron’s music from the female perspective.

Presented in conjunction with the Sunstar Festival, a program of the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater to highlight independent women artists who offer inspiration and encouragement.
