This innovative modern opera (which premiered in 2015) unveils the tumultuous life and relationships of jazz icon Charlie Parker.

Jazz saxophonist and composer Charles “Yardbird” Parker Jr. (1920-1955) was a blazingly fast virtuoso who introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords and chord substitutions. The famous New York City jazz club, Birdland, is named in his honor.

Parker’s personal life was just blazingly fast with mental health issues, a heroin addition, multiple marriages, persistent racism and complicated relationships with fellow music icons such as John “Dizzy” Gillespie (1917-1993).
