This modern opera (it premiered in 1996) is based on the best-selling 1980 novel of the same title written by author Judith Rossner (1935-2005).
“Emmeline” is the tragic tale of a teenage mill worker in the 1820’s who is forced to give up her illegitimate child after an affair with the boss’ son. Twenty years later, Emmeline makes a shocking discovery about her young husband that brings her personal pain and makes her a social outcast.
The opera was written by American composer Tobias Picker (born 1954) and set to a libretto written by poet J.D. McClatchy (1945-2018). Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
