This exhibition features three artists whose work continues a lineage that can be traced from the gothic stories of writers like Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and Flannery O’Connor (1925-1964), to our contemporary cultural fascination with horror and true crime narratives.

Each in different ways, Poe and O’Connor tapped into the darker side of people and of existence. Both also specialized in short stories, with O’Connor finding unique inspiration in the quirky people of her southern childhood. They are among the most prominent examples of gothic fiction: a genre that combines fiction and horror, death and, at times, romance.

The three photographers featured in “Gothic Fiction” explore elements crucial to the Gothic: foreboding and ancient settings, villains who are at once human and mythological, and a sense of overwhelming, creeping, unstoppable fear.
