Join center staff for a fascinating, enlightening tour of the exhibition “Pittsburgh’s John Kane: The Life & Art of an American Workman.”

John Kane (1860-1934) is considered by scholars as the first self-taught American painter in the 20th century to be recognized by a museum. Kane was a hard-fighting, heavy-drinking worker who once lost his leg in a railroad accident, yet he possessed a sensitive side and an artist’s soul.

The exhibition features 36 original works of art and dozens of artifacts that explore the world of John Kane.
