Distinguished bassist and educator Hilliard Greene relishes performing a wondrous range of genres — classical, jazz, rock, blues, rhythm & blues and tango, as well as the music of other continents and US regions.

In tonight’s special program, Hilliard brings to light the significance and beauty of the remarkable songs associated with the Underground Railroad with words and music. What is usually called “The Underground Railroad” was neither a railroad nor underground. It was actually a series of secret routes and safe houses that provided a means of escape for African-Americans fleeing slavery in the 19th century. Tonight’s selections are uniquely American heritage songs are recognized as a distinct musical genre.

Hilliard Greene has been studying music for more than 30 years and has been playing professionally over twenty. He is currently a faculty member at the Bass Collective, a music school based in New York City.

This is an “all-ages” program.
