War-torn northern Spain is the setting for this epic tale of love and sacrifice, deception and revenge written in 1853 by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901).

On one side of the conflict is nobleman Conte di Luna and on the other is troubadour Manrico. Both are in love with the gracious Leonora, a lady-in-waiting to the princess. Both are connected to the tormented gypsy woman Azucena. Both will soon find themselves in a dangerous situation where a secret will be revealed.

Although fiction, “Il Trovatore” is set during a tumultuous moment in Iberian history. Following the death of King Martin (1356-1410), multiple rivals laid claim to the throne of Aragon.  Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
