Everyone is invited to join the Ibeji Drum Ensemble to enjoy creating music together in a drum circle while learning about the African Diaspora (the word “kuumba” translates from the Swahili as “creating”)

What scholars call the African diaspora refers primarily to the descendants of the black Africans who were shipped to the Americas via the Atlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries. These descendants are found primarily in Brazil, the United States and Haiti. The word “diaspora” comes from the Greek word for “scattering.”

The impressively talented Mitchell Family — who have traveled to Senegal, Guinea and Ghana to study traditional drum, dance and culture — are the heart and soul of the Ibeji Drum Ensemble, which celebrates the rich musical traditions of West Africa. The ensemble’s name, Ibeji, refers to a set of spiritual twins in an ancient African religion.

This free, outdoor concert is being shown on a temporary stage sponsored by technology pioneer Green Mountain Energy in a parking lot on Seventh Street. Presented as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival, a 10-day celebration of visual and performing arts produced by the nonprofit Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and primarily sponsored by local financial firm Dollar Bank.
