A trio of local artists — Lyam B. Gabel (pictured), Jason MĂ©ndez and Sarah Huny Young — share works they created with the support of a Heinz Endowments initiative launched at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious respiratory syndrome that first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, 2019. The term “coronavirus” comes, in part, from the Latin word for “crown” in reference to the projections seen in a virus cell through an electron microscope. COVID-19 transmits when people breathe in air contaminated by droplets and small airborne particles containing the virus.

These artists’ work documenting the impacts of COVID on first generation college students in Latinx communities, tracking parallels between HIV/AIDS and COVID in queer communities, and highlighting the activism of Black and queer communities through protests against white supremacy, police brutality, and the prison industrial complex.
