Roger Humphries (pictured) is among the local artists performing a special program about the history of jazz — and particularly its connection to Pittsburgh.

A quintessential American musical art form, jazz originated in the former slave communities of Louisiana during the late 19th century. It has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals and often improvisation. The term “jazz” first appeared in the early 1900s. Pittsburgh neighborhood Hill District became a leading center of jazz after World War II (1939-1945).
