The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh join forces to perform works from the only opera written by German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Founded in 1908, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is a symphonic chorus comprised of volunteer singers and is named in honor of German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). The choir combines the clarity of words with the mystical power of music so that the deepest and most universal of human expressions are magnified through a community of voices.

Beethoven debuted “Fidelio” in 1805 and was reworked multiple times over the next decade. The opera tells how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named “Fidelio”, rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison.
