The internationally acclaimed violinist Karina Canellakis makes her conducting debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony in this weighty program filled with works by the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) and Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Reduced to the status of a “non-person” during the communist era, Shostakovich consistently used his artistic stance to speak against the tyranny of the Russian government. In his Tenth Symphony, we hear the composer’s reflection in light of dictator Joseph Stalin’s death, clearly harkening back to a heinous time where millions died under Stalin’s rule. Yet stay patient for the momentary triumph illustrated at the end of this dark symphony, knowing that good ultimately did conquer evil.
