The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs the local debut of a work written by contemporary Japanese composer Noriko Koide.
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
Noriko Koide’s “Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain” has a delicate yet deliberate feel. The piece begins slowly with rhythms added or enhanced like delicate brush strokes on a canvas. A musical poem is the result.
The program also includes a symphony written by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) and Polish-Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki (pictured) performing a concerto written by Austrian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957).
