The amazing cellist Alisa Weilerstein (pictured) joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program that includes the local debut a new work by Grammy Award winning composer Joan Tower.

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Joan Tower’s “A New Day” tells the beautiful arc of the composer’s final chapter of love with her older husband. The program also includes a 1956 overture written by American composer Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) and the wonderfully hallucinatory “Symphonie Fantastique” written in 1830 by French composer Hector Berloiz (1803-1869). The work illustrates his obsession with a woman he saw from afar only once, ultimately leading to this opium-inspired composition filled with festive balls and dancing witches.
