Ukrainian conductor Kirrill Karabits leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and PSO trumpeter Micah Wilkinson in a slate of works that incudes a famous piece by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Tchaikovsky’s second symphony was written in 1872 and is often referred to as “The Little Russian” by fans. This joyful work is an appropriate choice for conductor Kirrill Karabits. His homeland of Ukraine spent much of its history as part of the Russian Empire (often nicknamed “Little Russia”) and later as a constituent state of the Soviet Union. Its capital, Kiev, is known as “The Mother of Russian Cities”. Ukraine has been an independent nation since 1991.
