Bookended by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s (1879-1936) two dramatic pictures of Rome, this program carries the listener through the sounds of the ancient metropolis.
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
Starting with “Roman Festivals”, you will hear an ancient world filled with bloody gladiators and boisterous street performers, followed by a look into the towering Roman trees and the stories that they hold within them in “The Pines of Rome.”
Take a quick detour to the Iberian Peninsula alongside virtuosic violinist, María Dueñas, in French composer Edouard Lalo’s (1823-1892) impassioned “Symphonie espagnole”, painting a beautiful picture of Spanish culture. A new work by American composer Jessie Montgomery co-commissioned by the PSO rounds out this robust final weekend for the 2022-2023 season.
