Russia is a large nation spanning more than 17 million square miles of the Europe-Asia continent. What is now considered Russia appeared around 862CE. From the 17th through the 20th century, the Russian Empire was among the largest in the world. As the leading member of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1922-1991), it was the primary proponent of communist theory. The native language is rooted in an early form of Slavic and is today spoken by about 260 million people. Russian utilizes the Cyrillic alphabet, a written system formalized by Byzantine theologian Cyril (826CE – 869CE).

Admission is free. Meet in the library’s 3rd Floor Conference Room. For more information, call (412) 622-3151.
