Tonight’s performance is the culmination of this year’s Warhol School of Drag, which teaches teens the history, culture and practice of drag and gender-bending performance over the course of a seven-week program.

The slang word “drag” refers to a person (usually male) who assumes the exaggerated dress and mannerisms of the other gender for artistic or entertainment purposes. For centuries, men have dressed as women during traditional customs and rituals. In medieval England, when women were banned from appearing on stage, men in dresses was common in plays. The term “drag” first appeared in the 1870’s and may have derived from the sensation of long skirts trailing on the floor.
