Kids are welcome to join conductor Byron Stripling for a musical trek seeking to answer the question, “what makes jazz?”

Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression as transmitted through African-Americans starting in the late 19th century. It is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation.

Learn about the origins of this uniquely American artform, hear the many music traditions that create it, and discover the forms and techniques that bring jazz to life.

These are the in-person sessions. Online sessions are also available.
