This charming and sensitive 2018 computer animated film was inspired by a true canine hero.

That hero was a dog named Stubby (1916-1926) who was the mascot for an American infantry division during World War One (1914-1918). He served eighteen months, endured seventeen battles and often saved his human comrades from gas attacks.
