This groundbreaking play centers on a group of gay friends in 1968 New York City gathering for a birthday party. But the unexpected arrival of the host’s former college roommate — a straight man — spins the party into funny and revealing new directions.
“The Boys in the Band” was among the first works to express the complexity of gay people, as opposed to the common stereotypes. The characters are based on the friends that writer Mart Crowley (1935-2020) knew as a young man.
