Timely and thought-provoking, this contemporary opera (it was first staged in 2018)  explores the culture and political challenges facing 21st century America.

Set in a rural museum, “The Last American Hammer” centers on one-man militia Milcom Negley and mannered curator Tink Enraught. Milcom is a “Thirteenther” — a conspiracy theorist who believes an obscure, would-be Thirteenth amendment negates the authority of our government. Tink politely offers Milcom tea and cookies as he rages against the tyranny of federal overreach and for the closure of the town’s hammer factory.

Milcom is preparing for a massive military action against him and his museum refuge. But nothing can prepare him when an unexpected visitor arrives.

Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
