Students will produce original writing surrounding the topics of self-identification/self-realization as inspired by the play “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”

Written by August Wilson (1945-2005) and first staged in 1984, “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” is the story of an African-American family in early 20th century Pittsburgh. It explores identity and racism as seen through the eyes of boardinghouse owner Seth Holly.

Students will use the play to deepen their understanding of things that may cause an individual to be able to, or unable to establish a sense of self- awareness.
