Noted dancer and choreographer Septime Webre and celebrated musician/composer Matthew Pierce bring new life to a cherished work with the addition of colorful costumes, projection technology and delightful puppetry.
The children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written by author L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) and first published in 1900. It is the story of a Kansas farm girl and her pet dog who are swept away to a magical land. The novel spawned a series of sequels and a beloved 1939 film adaptation starring Judy Garland.
Pierce’s lush score becomes more inventive and unpredictable as the tale progresses — and Webre’s choreography becomes more spectacular — by incorporating elements of jazz and pop music.
Presented by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, which has been staging professional ballet in Pittsburgh since 1969.
