With a history dating back to 1819, the East Liberty Presbyterian Church (also known as the Cathedral Of Hope) is a community of 800 members and friends who attend up to four worship services offered each week and who reflect the racial, economic, age gender, and sexual orientation diversity of Greater Pittsburgh.

Presbyterian is a branch of Protestant Christianity rooted in the concept developed by French theologian John Calvin (1509-1564) who argued that the sum of human wisdom consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of us. Continuous study of the scriptures, theological writings and church doctrine are encouraged in Presbyterianism.

Today’s impressive East Liberty church building was designed by noted architect Ralph Adams Cram (1863-1942) and was completed in 1935. Cram was responsible for some of America’s finest worship structures and appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1926.

East Liberty occupies one city block and was built in the style of the Gothic cathedrals of Europe. This style emerged in the twelfth century and is characterized by the use of pointed arches, the emphasis on light mediated through colored stained glass and the cross-shaped floor plan. The windows are the work of eight stained glass studios, and a number of skilled craftsmen in wood and stone contributed their remarkable talents.

The four pillars of the church’s ministry consist of worship, education, spiritual growth and mission. Their goal is to provide resources in all these areas for people of all ages and singles or families of all types.
