Penn Avenue Place is the corporate home for the nonprofit healthcare company Highmark.

The building — actually three connected structures built over time — was originally the historic flagship to the Joseph Horne Company (1849-1994) department store chain and was one of Pittsburgh’s leading retailers for generations. The original building was constructed in 1892 and is six stories tall.

Some of the original Horne’s plaques remain installed on the building’s façade and the Horne’s Tree (now called the Unity Tree) continues to hang on the Penn Avenue Place corner every holiday season.

The first floor includes shops, most notably a Rite Aid drug store.

Penn Avenue Place is managed by the same firm that operates the adjacent Fifth Avenue Place.
