This branch of the Carnegie Library serves the city’s large, historic neighborhood of Homewood, located at Pittsburgh’s eastern border.
Established in 1890 through a gift by industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), the Carnegie is Pittsburgh’s public library system with 19 branches scattered throughout the city. Homewood began in the 1830s as a wealthy neighborhood, with several mansions and other stately homes. Over time, the rich moved on as working class people — most notably African-Americans —- arrived.
This library is one of the neighborhood’s shining lights, a handsome structure of brick and stone that first opened in 1910. A historic landmark, the library has been upgraded many times and includes valuable facilities such as computer stations, meeting rooms and a healthy collection of literature.
