Playwright, director and actress NaTasha Thompson stages this multi-media performance inspired by Marita Bonner’s play “The Purple Flower.”

Author, playwright and essayist Marita Bonner (1899-1971) often used her pen to explore issues facing the Black community by focusing on atypical women. Bonner was a respected part of the Harlem Renaissance (1918-circa 1935),  an intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, dance, art, fashion, literature, theater and politics centered in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. Her signature work is the one-act play “The Purple Flower,” an allegory on racism and sexism against black women.

“Lavender Terrace”  tells the story of marginalized and oppressed people fighting for the right to have life at its fullest over the last eighty years in America. This play progresses through time, beginning in the late 1920’s and landing in an obscured but familiar representation of the present day.
