The dynamic and innovative conductor Jacob Joyce leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing works composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), George Friederic Handel (1685-1759) and Jessie Montgomery (born 1981).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

The program: Felix Mendelssohn’s “The Hebrides” (1830) depicts the mood inspired by the composer’s visit to the beautiful Scottish island named Staffa. George Friederic Handel’s “Water Music” (1717) is a collection of musical suites inspired by nature. Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum” (2006) utilizes texture motives, layers of rhythmic or harmonic repetition that string together to form a bed of sound for melodies to weave in and out.

This free, outdoor concert is being staged at the intersection of Stanwix Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard. Presented as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival, a 10-day celebration of visual and performing arts produced by the nonprofit Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and primarily sponsored by local financial firm Dollar Bank.
