This exhibition is the first solo study of Nigerian artist and poet Peju Alatise.
Born in 1975, Peju Alatise began her art career with painting and now works in sculpture striving to visualize social issues of her country and personal experience. Alatise’s acclaimed 2015 Venice installation “Flying Girls” combined her love of art and literature. The piece consisted of eight life-size girls with wings based on the story of a ten-year-old servant girl who dreams of a realm where she is free.
“I Will Belong to Only Me” — anchored by “Flying Girls” — embodies Alatise’s artistic prowess, conceptual depth and multidisciplinary command across architecture, painting, sculpture and storytelling.
