Starring, directed and co-written Orson Welles (pictured), this remarkable 1941 film relates the experiences of an emotionally complicated media magnate.
The central character, Charles Foster Kane, is a composite of two real-life media powers — William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) and Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911).
Kane’s story is told through flashbacks, tracing his rise from the son of a boarding house owner to national figure and finally as a mysterious recluse. We see-saws between the well-meaning and the tyrannical, affecting his family, friends and the entire country.
