Join local metallurgist Emily Grugan for an insider’s perspective on the importance of Pittsburgh’s steel history.

Steel is a metal created by combining iron with carbon. It is versatile material that is used in a wide variety of ways, most notably in construction. Humans have been creating steel for centuries, but technology developed starting in the 17th century has made it more commercially viable.

For over 150 years, Pittsburgh has been known across the nation as the “Steel City.” From the early iterations of the steel industry to the boom of US steel production, and ultimately to Pittsburgh’s current metals manufacturing environment, the story of steel in Pittsburgh has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.
