Nafasi on Centre is a creative home in the Hill District that supports artists, culture workers, and community members through events, productions and collaborative projects.

The Hill District is a collection of neighborhoods adjacent to Downtown Pittsburgh. For the first half of the 20th Century this area was a vibrant African-American neighborhood often compared favorably to the Harlem section of New York City. In the mid-1950’s a substantial part of the Hill was slated for redevelopment, displacing about 8,000 individuals and leading to the neighborhood’s dramatic economic decline.

The gallery features exhibitions that include visual art, installations, and community-based work that reflect the history and voices of the Hill District, Black Pittsburgh and African Diaspora. Nafasi also hosts performances, workshops, and conversations that encourage collective learning and cultural exchange.

Nafasi on Centre is a project of the Hill Community Development Corporation (Hill CDC).
