Celebrate the opening of the center’s sizzling new Blacksmithing Studio with this day-long symposium on creating with metal.
Humans began working with copper about 11,000 years ago before expanding to embrace gold, silver and iron. Among the most ancient of such craftspeople is the metalsmith, who fashions useful items (utensils, jewelry, coinage or weapons) out of metal. The term “blacksmith” originates from two sources: the surface color of metal during heating and an early Germanic word meaning “skilled worker.”
There will be live demonstrations and presentations all day featuring accomplished metal artists such as Anna Koplik, Andrew Welton, Pat Quinn, Glen Gardner and Jared Ondovchik.
The event also includes a silent auction, market of artist-made work and two hours of free forge time. Experienced blacksmiths and curious newcomers are welcome. Breakfast, lunch and an event t-shirt are included.
