Local craft artist Rae Gold leads this introductory class in Joomchi.

Joomchi is a type of textured paper made with Korean mulberry tree pulp and water that is not unlike felt. The many layers of fiber are rubbed, squeezed and agitated with the hands, causing the fibers to tangle and adhere firmly to each other. The term “joomchi” originates in a Korean phrase that translates to English as “making a pouch.” This art form first appeared on the Korean Peninsula during the Goryeo Dynasty (918CE – 1270CE).

Class members will learn the ancient art of making laminated sheets of mulberry paper into a new sheet of paper that can be used as is or can be part of collage, mixed media or three-dimensional work. Students will leave with a completed piece.
