Singing in the traditional style developed in the 1920’s by South African mine workers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo blends intricate harmonies with spiritual depth and emotional power.

The band was formed in 1960 by singer and musician Joseph Shabalala (1940-2020) and quickly became popular in South Africa despite that country’s difficult racial divisions. Ladysmith became an international sensation in the 1980’s thanks to American singer/songwriter Paul Simon and his hit song “You Can Call Me Al.”

Today, the Shabalala family carries Joseph Shabalala’s vision forward, honoring the past while continuing to inspire new generations.
