African American choreographer and activist Alvin Ailey (1931-1989) is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African American participation in 20th-century concert dance. He founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company in 1958. It has grown into one of the nation’s leading modern dance organizations.
