The best-selling 1999 novel Battle Royale formed the basis to this controversially 2000 Japanese film.

Set in a near-future after a major economic crisis, the Japanese government has devised a way to control the nation’s most unruly teens: kidnap them and force these young people to fight each other to the death under the revolutionary Battle Royal Act. One of the kidnapped, middle school student Shuya Nanahara, must contend shifting alliances and risky actions to survive.

Presented as part of the Pittsburgh Japanese Film Fest, a celebration of Japanese cultur through the cinematic arts.
