Members of the club (and other interested people) are welcome to discuss the fascinating book Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” written by African-American author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960)
The book is based on her 1927 interviews with Cudjoe Lewis (1840-1935), the last known survivor of the Atlantic slave trade between Africa and the United States. The book failed to find a publisher at the time and remained in the archives of Howard University until being published in 2018.
During the weeks Hurston spent with Cudjo, they discussed Cudjo’s past- memories from Africa, the horrors of his capture, the harrowing voyage and the years he spent in slavery until the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865).
Admission is free. For more information, call (412) 921-1717.
