Officially called the Corps of Discovery Expedition, a select group of U.S. Army volunteers set off from Pittsburgh in 1804 to explore and document the vast newly acquired western territory. The expedition was commission by President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). It was led by Captain Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and Lieutenant William Clark (1770-1836).
