Noted photographer Eric Kunsman (pictured) found an unlikely source of inspiration of this exhibit’s images — a math equation.
In the 18th century, reformer Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) proposed an algorithm to help determine the moral rightness of an action by balancing the probable pleasures and pains that it would produce. Reformers in the 1940s named this algorithm “Felicific Calculsus” and used it to develop public policy.
Public policy is reflected of these images of his new home in Rochester, New York where he learns that those making the decisions often have no lived experience or personal connection to the issue at hand.
