Femi Kuti, the son of pioneering musician Fela Kuti (1938-1997), leads his band Positive Force in pushing the artistic boundaries of Afrobeat.
The genre known as Afrobeat originated in Nigeria and merges elements of traditional West African music with that of American jazz funk. Fela Kuti coined the term in the 1960’s.
Positive Force expands Afrobeat’s vocabulary by adding hints of punk and hip-hop to the sound, while maintaining its traditional roots and political message.
This free, outdoor show is being staged on 9th Street. Presented as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival, which has been presenting visual and performance art each summer since 1960. The festival is produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
