This museum-wide exhibition is centered around the women and femmes (an identity that was created in the working class lesbian bar culture of the 1950s) who were intertwined with pioneering pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987).

From transgender icons and stalwart members of the underground scene, to the artist’s mother and his radical would-be assassin, women in Warhol’s world played crucial roles in every area of his life and practice. This exhibition shines a light on the stories of these women, whose contributions have often been overlooked in re-tellings of Warhol’s story.

“Femme Touch” also transforms five floors of the museum’s permanent collection galleries to position Warhol’s work in dialogue with artifacts and artwork from the lives of these fascinating females.
