This visually and emotionally impressive exhibition is based on a story crafted by Peju Alatise.

Born in 1975, Peju Alatise is a Nigerian artist, poet and author. In the last decade, her ever-evolving and visceral practice has consistently held audiences in awe. The exquisite nature of her technique produces an encounter between what is sensed and what is known — as a material means to examine Nigeria’s shifting order of visibility within the global landscape.

The story Flying Girls is the tale of a little girl named Sim who lives in alternate worlds. In one, she is a nine-year old who is rented out as a domestic servant. In the other, she can fly at will in a world filled with talking birds and butterflies. Peju Alatise has brought her story into the three-dimensional world through her sculpture.

Admission is free. Presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, a program of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust that features exhibits and performances making their North American, United States or even World debut.
