Freedom, unity and the harvest season combine for this special day honoring the legendary Underground Railroad.

What is usually called “The Underground Railroad” was neither a railroad nor underground. It was actually a series of secret routes and safe houses that provided a means of escape for African Americans fleeing slavery in the 19th century. It is most associated with social activist and former slave Harriet Tubman (1822-1913; pictured).

Celebrate crops that were invaluable to people seeking freedom, like peanuts, green onions, and raspberries, and that were often used along their journey for nutritional, medicinal, and symbolic purposes.

Freedom Harvest unites the community with soulful music from live performers, a variety of culinary delights from local food and beverage vendors, and festivities the whole family can enjoy. Additionally, families can enjoy a variety of interactive activities, including garden tours and history hikes that weave tales of the past, face painting, and lawn games. The event will also host several community organizations, offering table activities and crafts to enrich the experience.

Admission is free to this event at the park’s environmental center.  Presented by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, which is dedicated to restoring and enhancing the city’s parks.
